Silence is where edits hide. A clean cut, a spliced insert or a removed passage often leaves an unnaturally flat gap. This decodes the audio, draws it as a waveform, and highlights every stretch below a level you choose, listing its start, end and length so you know where to listen.

Why silence matters

Recorded sound is never truly silent; even a quiet room has a floor of hiss, hum and ambience. A patch of true digital silence, or a level that drops far below the surrounding noise floor, is therefore unusual, and it is exactly what an edit can introduce: a cut that removes a section, a gap where two takes were joined, or a muted passage. Listing those gaps by timestamp gives you a map of where to listen closely.

Reading the results

Silence shows up two ways here. On the waveform, a silent stretch is where the grey trace collapses to a thin, flat line at the centre, and every gap the tool counts is painted over that spot as an orange band, so you can see at a glance where the quiet falls. Below the waveform, the same gaps are listed by timestamp, and clicking a row jumps the player to that moment. If nothing is highlighted, the recording simply never drops below your threshold for long enough, which the tool states in words rather than leaving the view blank.

Lower the threshold toward -60 dB to catch only near-total silence, or raise it toward -30 dB to include quiet passages. The minimum-gap setting hides the tiny pauses between words so only meaningful stretches remain. A natural recording has gaps that line up with breaths and sentence breaks; gaps with sharp, flat edges in the middle of speech, or a suspiciously clean silence, are worth a closer listen.

What it does not decide

A gap is a lead, not a verdict. Pauses are normal and most silences are innocent. This finds where the quiet is; it does not prove an edit. Pair it with the metadata reader and the hidden text scan, and listen to the gaps in context before drawing a conclusion.
